The Canadian capital’s administration has approved a concept inspired by a native species for the replacement of the Alexandra Bridge.

The design, which is called Motion, was one of three supplied by Arup Canada, with Knight Architects as lead bridge architects (link opens in new tab). The structure will link Ottawa and Gatineau over the Ottawa River.

Motion features three paired arches that rise and fall over the river. The bridge has generous, separated lanes for vehicles, cycles and pedestrians. The new bridge will also act as a public space because it includes areas for sightseeing and resting. It will also act as a gathering place when closed to traffic.

The design is being further developed, and the project will be procured by PSPC using a progressive design and build model. There will be a request for proposals in the spring.

Motion will replace the Royal Alexandra Interprovincial Bridge, which is a steel truss cantilever structure dating from 1900. It was recently re-opened after a closure for work to mitigate corrosion.
