Triton Construction won the US$10.9 million contract to replace two tunnel bridges located at milepost 179 on road I-64 in the state’s second largest county, Greenbrier. Originally built in the 1960s, each bridge typically carries about 5,600 vehicles a day above two lines of railway tracks, according to the West Virginia Department of Transportation.
“These bridges are now 60 years old and have seen a lot of salt and chlorides over the years given the relatively harsh winter weather this region of the state routinely experiences,” said Tracy Brown, WVDoH state bridge engineer. “The new bridges will have wider shoulders, meeting all modern design requirements, and will provide an increased vertical clearance for the rail lines running underneath.”
While the eastbound bridge is being demolished and rebuilt, traffic will be shifted onto the westbound bridge, then redirected to the eastbound span to replace the westbound bridge, minimising the impact of construction on the traveling public.
