The 70-year-old Friendship Bridge over the Danube is getting anti-corrosion treatment during the course of a programme of repairs.

The Road Infrastructure Agency of Bulgaria contractor DZZD is this week applying anti-corrosion protection to the bridge at Ruse which crosses the Danube into the Romanian city of Giurgu.

The repairs started last month and will carry on until summer 2026. These repairs include complete replacement of the asphalt layers, panels, waterproofing, and renewal of restraint systems and markings. The work is supervised by Danube Bridge-PII-Strol.

This is the first major repair to the bridge, although its joints were strengthened 22 years ago and the waterproofing and asphalt pavement was replaced in 2011.
