The selected design to replace the old steel bridge is a wider, taller cable-stayed structure with a 70m clearance above the water. The new 3km bridge will have two lanes in each direction, supported by two 180m towers. It has an expected life of 100 years.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of 26 March 2024 has had far-reaching effects on the regional and US economies. The contract for the reconstruction was awarded to US construction company in August last year (link opens in new tab).

It is hoped that the bridge will open in October 2028.
