A historic bridge over the St Lawrence River in Québec City, Canada, has this week been acquired by the Government of Canada from the Canadian National Railway (CN).
The federal Crown corporation, Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) will own the bridge and implement a rehabilitation plan.
CN will remain responsible for the rail corridor, and the Québécois provincial government will be responsible for the road corridor and bicycle path.
The Government of Canada will invest US$28.5 million a year for 25 years in rehabilitating the bridge, which opened in 1919. The rehab will start with inspections and diagnosis. The government expects work to include repair and reinforcement of piers and footings, as well as painting against corrosion and to improve the appearance.
