The USA’s bridge infrastructure has been graded C by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
ASCE grades 18 categories of infrastructure – including bridges – from A to F, like a school report card. The overall grade for 2025 was C-minus, the highest grade since 1998, while the bridges category received a C-grade.
The report says that there are 623,000 bridges in the USA, of which 49.1% are in “fair” condition and 44.1% are in “good” condition. It adds, “As bridges in fair condition continue to age – presenting the possibility of being further downgraded – they also exemplify an opportunity because they can be preserved at a lower cost than bridges in poor condition.”
Bridges in the USA got a recent investment boost from a federal scheme; but ASCE estimates that that there is a shortfall of US$191 billion.
