A bridge in the centre of Scotland’s capital city was suddenly closed this week after an assessment found structural issues.

The single span plate girder bridge, which dates from about 1885, takes Harrison Road over the Union Canal. It is made from cast iron and has sandstone abutments and is listed by Historic Environment Scotland.

The City of Edinburgh Council estimates that the bridge will be closed for 129 working days. Planned works include replacing the deck with a reinforced concrete slab to take loading off the cast-iron girders.

The paths under the bridge remain open for the time being.
