Newport City Council has revealed details of its plans for the Newport Transporter Bridge.
The bridge is presently closed during the ongoing Transporter Bridge Transformation Project, which includes restoration of the structure and the building of a new visitor centre.
When the work is completed in late summer 2025, the bridge will be the only working transporter crossing in the UK.
The work has been funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Welsh Government and the Wolfson Foundation. Previous plans for the restoration of the Newport Transport Bridge stalled during the pandemic (link opens in new tab).
In the meantime, Newport City Council will be inviting local groups to visit the site ahead of the official opening.
The 120-year old transporter bridge has a Grade 1 listing. It is one of just six operational transporter bridges in the world. Transporter bridges carry a moving section of roadway over a river on a gondola. The design allows clearance for water traffic without the need for long approach ramps.
