A contract has been awarded for construction management services in the project to rehabilitate a bridge connecting Arlington, Virginia, to Washington DC in the north eastern USA.

The Theodore Roosvelt Memorial Bridge will undergo repairs, including repainting, and modernisation, supervised by the USA-based infrastructure design firm HNTB. The contract covers construction supervision and inspection, outreach and engagement, utility coordination, schedule reviews and project closeout. The rehab aims to extend the service life of the bridge by 20 to 30 years and to improve mobility and safety for foot travellers and cyclists.

The project, which is commissioned by the District of Columbia Department of Transportation, will see the installation of a new deck and improvements to railings and barriers. The sidewalks on the steel bridge over the Potomac River will also be expanded, and the navigation and lighting systems overhauled.

The bridge opened in 1964 and carries 32.6 million vehicles a year.
