The My Thuan Project Management Board has put forward two proposals for a road and rail crossing over the Hau River that will connect two expressways in the south west of Vietnam.

The first option is two separate bridges, one for road and the other for rail. It will have a composite steel girder structure with a deck made from reinforced concrete. The main span would be 550m and the bridge will be 1,090m long.

The second option would be a single bridge 1,110m long with a 550m main span and it would have a steel truss girder structure.

This second option has lower construction costs and a smaller footprint, but putting road and rail traffic on a single bridge will make the structure more complex to manage, maintain and operate.

Both designs will have a navigational width of 300m, with a 39m clearance at its highest point.

Construction of Can Tho 2 will start in 2026, with a completion date in 2029. This bridge will be the final piece in an expressway route that links up the north and the south of Vietnam to allow high-speed transportation of goods and people.

Can Tho 2 Bridge is located 4.5km downstream from Can Tho Bridge, which opened in 2010, following a fatal collapse during construction in 2007.
