City Bridge Foundation has put out a call for a contractor to complete renovation work on Blackfriars Bridge which was halted in 2023 by navigation issues.

The US$20 million project was partially completed in 2023; but the contractor could not secure permission to close the river at that time. This was due to the Tideway super sewer project, which will finish later this year. This means that City Bridge Foundation can now appoint a contractor.

Blackfriars bridge, which opened in 1869, has more than 2,000 cast-iron balusters which are to be renovated or replaced, and the whole structure will be painted.

City Bridge Foundation is a 900-year-old charity that owns five Thames crossings.
